In recent discussions, many entrepreneurs have consistently highlighted counterfeit products as the most pressing issue in the Home Textile market. This problem, though long-standing, has evolved into a more insidious form—counterfeit items are now harder to detect, making the situation even more frustrating for consumers and legitimate businesses alike.
During an interview with Sun Fengqin, Chairman of Inner Mongolia Xinlong Cold-proof Products Factory, she emphasized how counterfeits have severely impacted the cashmere quilt market. Cashmere is known for its softness, breathability, and warmth, making it ideal for sleep. Most high-quality cashmere comes from Inner Mongolia, which accounts for 60% of global production. The raw material alone costs between 950,000 to 1.16 million yuan per ton, according to Sun. Based on this, a standard 2m x 2.3m double cashmere quilt weighing 2kg would cost at least 2,000 yuan in raw materials. However, Sun noted that some markets sell similar quilts for less than $1,000, which is far below the actual cost. “This is not feasible,†she said, adding that these products often originate from the south, where sourcing quality materials is more expensive and labor-intensive.
Sun also shared her struggles in entering second- and third-tier cities, where fake and low-quality products dominate the market. Her company’s prices are significantly higher, making it difficult to compete. “Consumers don’t understand the difference and get easily deceived,†she added. Similar concerns were raised by Wang Wenyi, Chairman of Silkworm Empress, who pointed out that counterfeit goods disrupt the pricing system in the silk market, especially in group purchases. Many buyers are unaware they’re getting substandard products, leading to confusion about real product value.
The pressure to offer discounts is another challenge. Brands struggle to maintain profitability while competing with fake products. Some companies raise prices before offering discounts, while others compromise on quality. This cycle harms genuine brands, reduces profit margins, and creates a chaotic market environment. Despite these challenges, Sun Fengqin remains committed to quality. Her company, originally a small cold-proof factory run by retired cadres, has grown into a leader in producing premium cashmere and camel wool products.
A key factor in their success is a patented technology called “a production method of fluff batting machine.†This innovation ensures cleaner processing, pollution-free treatment, and better shaping of inner tubes. It guarantees 30 years of core performance, something counterfeit products cannot match. Sun believes that while the production cost is high, it’s worth it to provide the best possible products. “I’d rather slow down development than compromise on quality,†she said.
Ultimately, the battle against counterfeits requires not only technological advancements but also consumer education. While the road is tough, true quality will eventually prevail over fakes. As the market evolves, enterprises must continue to innovate, protect their brand integrity, and guide consumers toward informed choices. Only then can the home textile industry thrive in a fair and sustainable way.
