Experts expect world cotton production and consumption to remain flat in 2011

According to a report published by Pakistan's "News" on September 3, the International Cotton Advisory Committee (ICAC) released its latest analysis, stating that global cotton production and consumption are expected to reach a balance of approximately 25.1 million tons for the 2010-2011 season. This projection comes as cotton output rises by 15%, while demand for textile raw materials grows by 2%. The increase in supply is largely driven by strong performance in major producing countries, particularly the United States. The U.S. is anticipated to produce 4 million tons of cotton during the 2010-2011 season, marking a significant 52% year-on-year increase. This surge in American cotton production is seen as the primary factor behind the global supply boost. Meanwhile, China and India continue to be key drivers of demand, with their growing textile industries fueling higher consumption. World cotton imports are projected to rise by 9% this year, reaching 8.5 million tons. China alone is expected to import 3.1 million tons, a 29% increase compared to previous years. The U.S., as a major exporter, is also set to see a 27% rise in cotton exports, reaching 3.3 million tons. These figures highlight the shifting dynamics in global cotton trade. Analysts suggest that the high U.S. cotton output and India’s surplus of 5 million bales will help offset the drop in Pakistan’s cotton production caused by recent flooding. This will allow Pakistan’s domestic textile mills to maintain production levels by relying on imported cotton. As a result, the global cotton market is expected to remain stable despite regional disruptions, showcasing the resilience of international trade networks.
