Experts expect world cotton production and consumption to remain flat in 2011

According to a report published by the Pakistani newspaper "News" on September 3, the International Cotton Advisory Committee (ICAC) recently released its forecast for the 2010-2011 global cotton season. The report highlights that increased production and steady demand are expected to bring the world cotton market into balance, with an estimated total of 25.1 million tons produced and consumed. This figure reflects a 15% rise in cotton output and a modest 2% increase in textile raw material demand. The U.S. is set to be a major contributor to this growth, with projections showing a 52% year-on-year increase in cotton production, reaching 4 million tons. This surge is largely attributed to favorable growing conditions and improved yields. Meanwhile, China and India continue to lead the way in terms of cotton demand, driven by their large textile industries and expanding markets. Global cotton imports are anticipated to rise by 9% this year, reaching 8.5 million tons. Notably, China’s cotton imports are expected to jump by 29%, totaling 3.1 million tons, while U.S. exports are projected to increase by 27% to 3.3 million tons. These figures underscore the strong interdependence between global cotton producers and consumers. Analysts suggest that the high U.S. cotton output and India's surplus of 5 million bales will help offset the decline in Pakistan’s cotton production caused by recent flooding. This should ensure that Pakistani textile manufacturers can still meet domestic demand through imported cotton, maintaining stability in the local industry despite the natural challenges faced.
