It's been quite some time since we last heard from Flat S, hasn't it? The last we knew, she had just wrapped up her time in Portugal, enjoying the company of Ana Sofia and her family. But now, it seems Flat S has made her way back to the UK, where she’s been exploring the sights with Maria and her family. Maria, who hails from Portugal herself, has been living in the UK for the past couple of years. She’s the proud mom of twin six-year-old girls and began sewing their clothes when they first moved here. You can read more about Maria's sewing adventures on her blog, Fairies, Bubbles & Co. Here's Maria.
In March, we were thrilled to welcome a very special guest—Flat S! As big fans of Oliver + S clothing, we were eager to show her around some of our favorite spots right away, but unfortunately, the weather wasn’t cooperating, leading to a bit of a logistical hiccup beyond our control.
Finally, the weather improved just in time for Easter, and Flat S joined us in the egg hunt. The kids ended up with far too many sweets, as is often the case during these events.
To take full advantage of the better weather, we decided to head to one of our favorite parks located in Virginia Water. This park is stunning, featuring a lake, cascading waterfalls, Roman ruins, a totem pole, and breathtaking landscapes—it’s perfect for a leisurely stroll or even a picnic.
We also took Flat S on a trip to Windsor, home to Windsor Castle, the oldest and largest inhabited castle in the world, and the Queen’s official residence. Interestingly, on the day we visited, the Queen was actually in the castle. If you look closely at the photos, you'll notice the flag flying on the tower, which indicates the Queen's presence.
Windsor isn’t just about the castle though; it’s a charming city perfect for wandering its streets and visiting the railway station. Or, you could enjoy a peaceful walk along the banks of the River Thames.
Of course, we couldn’t let Flat S leave London without visiting some of its iconic landmarks. Our first stop was the Natural History Museum, one of our absolute favorites. Coincidentally, the day before we visited, it marked 134 years since it first opened to the public.
Following the museum, we ventured to Westminster Abbey and took in the view of Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament. Although we didn’t get to see Big Ben up close, we certainly heard it loud and clear.
We continued our journey through St. James Park, where we paused to relax and observed the diverse birdlife, including pelicans, herons, and ducks, all thriving right in the heart of the city.
After recharging, Flat S expressed a desire to visit one of London’s most famous and bustling areas—Piccadilly Circus!
From there, we strolled through the theater district, though sadly, we missed out on catching a musical. Eventually, we reached Covent Garden, a historic market area that dates back to the 1830s and was later transformed into a shopping center in 1980. It’s a lively place filled with craft stalls, fancy shops, and cozy eateries. M enjoys the violin players, while F is always captivated by the living statues. Flat S seemed to love the atmosphere as well, and it was lovely to see how some local children took an interest in her.
We truly hope Flat S had a wonderful time with us. We certainly did. And I’m confident she’ll have an equally enjoyable visit with her next host family.
Bye, Flat S! It was such a pleasure having you here, and we hope to see you again soon.
Thank you, Maria. It looks like Flat S had an incredible experience. As always, we’re excited to find out where she’s heading next.
