Welcome everyone to today's blog post! We're thrilled to introduce Catherine, who's joining us with the third installment of the Size 5 Project. This series celebrates the beloved Oliver + S patterns by giving them a proper send-off before our little ones outgrow them. We began with the Puppet Show Shorts, followed by the Tea Party Dress, and now we're diving into the iconic Bubble Dress. Catherine has put together a delightful roundup for us, and without further ado, here she is!
Thank you so much for having me on the Oliver + S blog! Being a part of the Size Five Project has been such a meaningful experience, especially since both my daughter and my niece are turning five this year. It made me realize how quickly time flies, and I'm grateful for the push to make use of these timeless patterns while they still fit.
Â
Â
Of all the patterns I've worked with over the years, the Bubble Dress holds a special place in my heart. There’s something magical about its silhouette—it reminds me of the puffed skirts that were so popular in the '80s. My connection to this dress runs deep because it was also my very first Oliver + S project when my daughter was just a baby. I remember receiving countless compliments on it—some even from strangers in elevators or grocery store lines! Now that I’m sewing size 5, I continue to discover fresh details to admire and new ideas inspired by the diverse interpretations shared in the Flickr community. So let's take a closer look at some of those inspiring variations.
This stunning version by Marie-Michelle caught my eye immediately, crafted in a gorgeous chiffon voile fabric. Even revisiting it later, it remains as captivating as ever. It perfectly captures the elegance of the Bubble Dress while maintaining its suitability for a preschooler...

Â
Another glamorous take comes from Nicole, who used an exquisite fabric to create a beautifully formal look. Her Bubble Dress is nothing short of breathtaking!
Â
While the Bubble Dress is undoubtedly perfect for special occasions, its clean lines also lend themselves beautifully to playful prints. I adore this image from george&izzy, where the dress looks like the ideal companion for an outdoor adventure.
Â
Â
Meanwhile, this version from sarahlamont45 takes a bold approach with a vibrant jungle print. Talk about stepping outside the box!
One of the original appeals of the Bubble Dress for me was the option to add scallops along the skirt's edge. NOTyourrunofthemill created a lovely rendition where the scallops complement the bold floral print flawlessly.
Though the dress is named after its bubble-like silhouette, the bodice itself boasts an equally striking shape. Many makers have opted to de-bubblefy the design by pairing the bodice with a full skirt instead. I particularly love this creation from Carolyn, whose description perfectly encapsulates its charm.
Â
Â
Charm.mama took the de-bubblefication concept further by combining it with a clever border print, resulting in these adorable flower girl dresses.
Lastly, the Bubble Dress has inspired some truly creative costumes. JenLoving’s bumblebee outfit, complete with black velvet stripes and gauzy wings, almost seems to buzz away on its own!
Â
Â
And finally, we have this incredible volcano creation from Juliamom2009. Be sure to check out her blog post detailing the entire process behind bringing this vision to life.
Â
Â
Now that we've explored some of the incredible variations, are you ready to give the Bubble Dress a try? Join Catherine tomorrow and the day after for the Bubble Dress sew-along!
Thank you so much, Catherine, for sharing all this amazing inspiration. We hope you'll enjoy the sew-along and perhaps even share your own creations with us.
