Teach you to choose sports shoes

Ben Wang, April 13 hearing: Q: Recently, I've been thinking about buying a pair of running shoes, but there are so many brands and styles available in the market. I'd like to get some professional advice on what to look for. A: When exercising, the pressure on your feet can be several times higher than when standing still. Wearing the wrong type of shoes can easily lead to foot injuries. In the long run, it may even cause heel pain, plantar fasciitis, or issues with the arch of your foot. Generally, foot types fall into three categories: normal, flatfoot, and high arch. According to statistics, about six out of ten adults have some degree of foot misalignment, and Asians tend to have more cases of flat feet. A simple way to check your foot type is to wet your feet and step onto a piece of paper. If you have flat feet, the inner arch will appear very flat, almost touching the ground entirely. For those with high arches, the arch will be very pronounced, and the middle part of the foot won’t make full contact with the paper. For runners with flat feet, the feet tend to roll inward during movement, which increases strain on the feet. When choosing shoes, it's important to go for models that offer strong arch support, good insoles, and firm heel cups. Shoes with straight soles are also recommended. Otherwise, you might end up with plantar fasciitis. On the other hand, people with high arches should look for shoes with excellent shock absorption features, such as air cushions or responsive midsoles, to reduce impact on the feet. It’s not advisable to use one pair of shoes for all activities. Different sports place different demands on shoes—whether it's shock absorption, traction, or flexibility. Running shoes should be lightweight, with good cushioning and a flexible forefoot to match the motion of sprinting. Tennis shoes need better grip due to sudden stops and turns, while basketball shoes must provide strong cushioning to handle jumps and impacts. High-top shoes are ideal for basketball as they offer more ankle support and help prevent sprains. Badminton players benefit from lighter, more flexible shoes. For general indoor workouts, multi-purpose shoes with good grip are a good choice. When wearing new shoes, avoid using them for too long at once, as they may not yet fit your feet properly. Once your shoes start showing signs of wear—like air cushions losing their bounce, or the tread becoming worn—you should replace them. Other tips for shoe care: - Old shoes can be repurposed into something useful instead of being thrown away. - Don’t throw away old shoes without checking if they can be reused or recycled. - Add a protective layer to your shoes for extra durability. - How to clean matte shoes? - Wear breathable, antibacterial socks to keep your shoes fresh and odor-free. - The small tail on sports shoes actually has three hidden functions you might not know about. - High heels can make noise—here are four ways to reduce that sound. - How to choose the right shoes during pregnancy? Flat shoes may not be the safest option. - What to do if your shoes get moldy? - Wearing these kinds of shoes in summer could actually be harmful to your feet.
